State and Federal Grant Opportunities

The Texas Veterans Commission has opened its fiscal 2028 grant cycle for the Fund for Veterans' Assistance. Counties are eligible for all four grant categories: General Assistance, which covers financial aid, food and transportation; Housing for Texas Heroes, which pays for home repairs for low-income veterans; Veterans Mental Health, which funds counseling; and Veterans Treatment Court. 

Counties can hold up to four of these grants at once, with awards ranging from $50,000 to $600,000 in each category. It’s important to note that these are reimbursement grants. The application portal opens Oct. 2, and applications are due by 5 p.m. CST Dec. 2 through the TVC grants portal. You can read the official request for applications here.  

On the federal side, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs offers several grants that Texas counties can apply for directly. The Staff Sergeant Parker Gordon Fox Suicide Prevention Grant Program funds veteran suicide prevention efforts, including outreach, mental health screening, peer support and help connecting veterans with their benefits. The Grant and Per Diem Program pays for transitional housing and support services for veterans who are homeless, while the Legal Services for Veterans program covers legal aid for veterans who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.
